Tropical Conservation & Development Program
UF Center for Latin American Studies
On the 24th of February, the TCD Student Group organized its first retreat bringing together students and alumni to discuss the TCD Program and the role of students in shaping it. It was a rich dialogue that recognize the value of the TCD community in the experience of being a graduate student working in the interface of conservation and development, as it provides peer-to-peer exchanges, social support and conviviality. Moreover, relevant ideas emerged, such as continuing the dialogue between students with more retreats; expanding representation of students and faculty beyond Latin America to include those working in Africa and Asia; having spaces for faculty to share their research; having a database of the research/work conducted by faculty, graduate students, and alumni; creating opportunities for post-doc; and develop more interdisciplinary courses, skills courses or workshops, and tropical ecology classes for those with a more social science background. The retreat was an unique opportunities for students to think collectively and bring ideas to be discussed and developed together with faculty and TCD administration. More information will be available in a report of the event.
If you miss it or want to learn about what was discussed, check out the two videos produced by Carolina Jordao (event facilitator) and Pamela Montero Alvarez (co-facilitator). The videos show highlights of the TCD student retreat and a summary of main ideas and suggestions moving forward. This retreat was one of many before the entire TCD community gathers at the end of the Spring semester to discuss the TCD Program moving forward.
