We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Meshach Pierre, a recent UF/TCD/Sociology alum who received a Master’s degree and a TCD graduate certificate. For his Master’s degree Meshach examined the human dimensions of human-jaguar conflict in the Rupununi region of Guyana, his home country. He applied the interdisciplinary conservation criminology framework in his research, a toolkit that draws from natural resources management, risk science, and criminology. His research was designed to understand the factors that affect risk perceptions and tolerance of jaguars, and the potential role that community members may play in preventing jaguar killing. At the time of his death late last week, Meschach was conducting mammal surveys in the Rupununi.
We remember him so fondly and will miss him terribly. Our hearts go out to his family and his many friends here at UF, in Guyana, and around the globe. We share a link that others have provided about our friend: https://tinyurl.com/2m99pr2p
