We are excited to share this link which provides a “Guide to Marianne Schmink Papers” bringing together her scholarly work over the past decades. Marianne Schmink was one of the founders of the Tropical Conservation and Development Program and instrumental in both the preceding programs, such as the Amazon Research and Training Programs, as well as the complementary Master’s in Sustainable Development Practice Program.
Marianne arrived to the University of Florida as a post-doctoral fellow in 1979 to work with Dr. Charles Wagley. Together with Drs. Wagley and Charles Wood, to formalize the Amazon Research and Training Program (ARTP) in 1980 with funding from the Mellon Foundation.
Throughout her career at UF, Marianne lead development of interdisciplinary research and training programs in the Center for Latin American Studies. She brought together faculty from across UF, to develop programs integrating social and natural science perspectives to address conservation and development issues, with a strong focus on the Amazon. She served as TCD’s Director for more than 20 years and led the program to prominence, including securing major grants and endowment funds which support graduate assistantships, field research grants, internships among other activities. She is now Professor Emeritus in the Center for Latin American Studies.
