UF SNRE and TCD alumna Diana (Tita) Alvira was selected by the Consulate of Colombia in Chicago as an outstanding Colombian working abroad in a ceremony on October 10th.This date coincides with the “National Day of the Colombian Migrant”, which was established in 1999 to recognize the courage and work of Colombians working outside of their country. At UF, Tita completed her MS degree in Botany, and her PhD in Interdiscipilinary Ecology in the School of Natural Resources and Conservation. She also completed the Graduate Certificate in Tropical Conservation and Development in TCD and has been an active alumna of the program. Her dissertation research examined the social, economic and political dynamics of the communities that live around protected areas in the Amazon. Today, Tita is working with an interdisciplinary team at the Field Museum’s Keller Science Action Center where she is Program Manager for the Conservation for Well-being initiative, and working to create long-term strategies for integrating conservation, sustainable livelihoods, and local well-being in the Andes-Amazon region.
