Tropical Conservation & Development Program
UF Center for Latin American Studies
We are thrilled to make public a report on “Biocultural Conservation in Higher Education: Organizational Review and Consultation” that was done by TCD consultant Dr. Francisca Saavedra. Over the years TCD has taken community-based conservation approaches that are characterized by partnerships with professionals, practitioners, and forest communities throughout the tropics. Emerging from these experiences have been the clear understanding that when forest and riverine peoples take a lead role in strategies and actions to protect traditional livelihoods and manage landscapes and resources, outcomes for both people and nature are better. We also believe that biocultural conservation offers an avenue to strengthen TCD’s approaches and how we work with Indigenous and other traditional peoples. To better understand the concept of biocultural conservation, how it can be effectively implemented and the role of academia in supporting front-line conservationists to achieve biocultural conservation, we asked Francisca to develop this report. The report summarizes some existing biocultural conservation programs and shares findings and reflections from leaders in the field. We thank these incredible individuals for taking the time to share their expertise, we are inspired by their innovation and commitment, and we look forward to the next steps that include continued dialogue and mutual learning. Stay tuned to more information about our first event scheduled on 1 December!
